Neurodivergent refers to individuals whose brain functions, learns, and/or behaviors are different from what is considered “typical” or “neurotypical”. This encompasses a range of neurological differences, including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and dyspraxia. It’s important to note that neurodivergence is not a diagnosis, but rather a term describing the natural variation in how the brain operates. Neurodiversity is a concept that the differences are a natural part of human variation, similar to other forms of diversity like race, gender or ethnicity. Neurotypical considers individual brain function as the norm in society.
Characteristics of Neurodivergent individuals may experience unique emotional and behavioral symptoms, such as difficulties with social interactions, heightened anxiety, challenges with focus or impulsivity and sensory sensitivities. Yet, they can often bring unique cognitive strengths, such as creativity, innovation, and specialized skill sets.
The Neurodiversity paradigm emphasizes that these differences are not deficits but rather variations in human conditions and brain functions that should be recognized and respected.
