Hello, I'm Angela Sharp, and welcome to A Sharp Outlook. And if you're at the point of retirement or your parents have retired and you're looking for things to make sure that they stay well, this show is for you. Independence, navigating care and vitality in the later years. That's what we're going to talk about today. What does it mean to age well in a modern world? from managing the daily logistics of care to keeping your body and mind sharp.
01 The journey of aging, it's complex, but you don't have to walk it alone. Today, we're gonna take a deep dive and explore the essential resources offered to seniors and the evidence-based wellness strategies of Project Enhance. Whether you are looking for practical support for a loved one or planning for your own vibrant future, I'm glad you can join us today. And we're going to break down all of the safety nets and the strength building programs that make aging in place not just possible, but empowered. Empowered. Aging is often discussed as a series of challenges to be managed.
55 But what if we just view it a little differently? View it as a transition that can be navigated with strategy, support, and strength. Today, We'll pull back the curtain on the essential resources that are available that turns the idea of aging in place into a tangible reality. And when I talk about aging in place, I'm talking about parents or yourself aging in your own home, aging where you are right now instead of maybe going to a senior facility.
40 Aging in place can be possible if all of the different things that you need to protect yourself, to keep yourself from falling, to make sure that you're eating healthy meals, just a lot of things that you're going to want those systems around you just to make sure that you are surviving while you're thriving, you know, in place. But it is a possibility if you have all of the necessary things around you to make sure that it is possible so it is a tangible reality how to utilize one of the most important things that you want to get in contact with first is a case manager case managers will help you coordinate the complex care needs they'll answer All of your questions, they'll help you complete forms.
41 They'll help you understand what you can and cannot do. They'll provide you with all the necessary fiscal and security and medical needs. But there's other programs that are out there too. That's just more than just physical gains, but also mental and emotional gains that you want to have. How to bridge the space between daily living assistance and long-term vitality? What are practical ways to alleviate the pressure on families and on yourself while ensuring the highest quality of life for you or your loved ones is possible?
27 Whether you are an older adult planning for your own future or a caregiver navigating the complexities of parents' transition, We're going to help you find the tools so that you can move from just getting by to truly thriving. Don't we want to do that? We've been independent. We've been going where we want to go. We've been doing the things we want to do. We've been laughing. We've been socializing. We've been having fun. And then everyone feels because you're getting older, you need to be put in a little box. And so all of the fun things about life are taken away. And the only thing you do is look out a window and take medications and eat a meal. But there's more to it. We're going to talk about how to thrive in your later years, how to still have relationships, how to still have fun, how to still have healthy meals, but have them regularly.
34 We're going to begin by exploring the critical safety nets that are provided by different organizations around the country. In the state of Washington, there is a great organization called Sound Generations and is dedicated to understanding the pillars of nutritional support, transportational support, and case management, healthy minds, healthy bodies, and healthy emotions. What does that mean to you? If you or a loved one feels strain of daily logistics, or if simply want to know what resources are available before a crisis hits, then you want to search for the services in your area. I mentioned one in the state of Washington. But there are other services all around the country. And so you have to do some research and find service providers in your area. But what you want to do before you start looking at going to a nursing home or something like that, begin to contact case managers to find out specific things that you need to know before you begin this project. And then what kind of services, what kind of things that they're providing
04 so that you can have enjoyment as you are aging. You don't end up becoming bored. You don't end up becoming isolated as many do because you didn't plan ahead or didn't know where to look. I'm doing research myself for other family members and potentially myself. So I want to know these things in advance. We always want to have information to make decisions and when we don't have enough information, we end up making the wrong decisions and it can be really devastating if that does occur. So you want to look for the services in your area.
50 and find out, you know, who are the service providers, what are the things that I want to have and want to need. But also, as you're looking for who's providing food, who's providing bed and shelter, who's providing medications, you want to also find out about other programs that are out there. Evidence-based programs like Enhance Fitness and Enhance Wellness. They're helping Older people reclaim their physical strength, sharpen their mental health, and combat the isolation that often accompanies the aging process. As an organization, they should be focusing on providing a comprehensive safety net for the aging and adults with disabilities. Look and see where the locations are closest to you and what the services are offered. And one way to shorten the research is to find a case manager.
57 Most of the time you can find a case manager. If you're on Medicare or Medicaid, you can contact them. They will give you a case manager. You can check your insurance if you have private insurance for long-term care. You can contact them. They will provide you with a case manager. But starting with them, because they know the system, they know the ins and outs, they know all of the requirements, it will save a lot of time and also save you a lot of frustration. And it can be frustrating when you don't know where to go, when you're holding on the phone line for 45 minutes to an hour and then click, Somehow the phone hangs up and you have to call back and wait another hour and 45 minutes. Nobody wants to do that with their time.
48 But by speaking with a case manager in your area, you'll also be able to find out about services that are free, or covered by Medicare, covered by Medicaid, personal insurance. AARP offers different services that you can take advantage of. And there are also foundations for the agent or disability programs. So you want to, like I said, find out what resources are available to you as you're beginning this process so that you don't miss out on important things that you could be enjoying but didn't know about. So I want to tell you everything that is available to you.
36 As I mentioned, Sound Generations is an organization here in the state of Washington. And one of the things they're known for, they have one of the largest Meals on Wheels programs in the Pacific Northwest region. And we all know that eating is critical. Enjoyable, too. And the critical benefits of aging individuals who have mobility issues or difficulty preparing their own nutritionally dense meals, not eating fast food, but eating the kind of meals that are managed and balanced so that you're getting the proper nutrition for yourself to be able to maintain your physical strength, your mental strength, your emotional strength. And so it's really important to have good healthy meals. And so Meals on Wheels is one of the services that's available in certain areas. And you want to make sure that you're able to get in touch with an organization that provides Meals on wheels because, you know, you might have mobility issues. And so it's a little more difficult, especially if you are staying in your own home and you need assistance in food preparation.
56 You can have someone that comes in bringing you meals already prepared, bringing meals, preparing them or taking you to local dining places. places that are in your particular area and that is in your particular budget. A lot of the meals that at the community dining or at the community, you know, service areas that are there, the cost is generally free or it's a low cost, pretty minimal. or on a sliding scale so that you are able to take advantage of the discounts that are available because you have got to the point of aging. Don't be ashamed of growing old. I know when I was able to get into AARP and start getting my coupons and discounts and my food and different things, I was like, oh, I've been waiting all my life to get here so I can get my discounts. Don't leave your discounts on the table. That's like leaving money on the table. You don't want to do that. You want to be informed so you can take advantage of every service that is available to you. And if it's free, you take advantage of it free. Or if there are discounts and you can get it at a lower cost, you're able to do that. You've earned that right. Take advantage of it.
27 You have worked. You have paid. paid taxes, you have invested in this nation. It's time for you to be a recipient of all of the hard work and all of the dedication and all of the financial contributions or taxes that you have given to this nation. It's your turn. You have the right to be slightly vulnerable. you have a right to take advantage of what you have contributed. Now it is now paying back. It's like investing into a specific stock or different things like that. At some point in time, it's time for you to get dividends.
14 on your investment. And so this is what is happening. You have come to the age where now it's time for you to be able to receive the dividends of all that you have provided over the years of your life. And so being able to know what's available and how to get to it, it's really important. For instance, when you are utilizing Meals on Wheels, They're not just bringing you fast foods. Like I said, they're preparing not only just meals, they're preparing meals that are specialized. They're specialized based on your diet. If you need low sodium or you need a diabetic diet or heart healthy or renal dash or a vegetarian, these are all options and you get to Tell them that these are the options. These are the types of foods that I can and cannot eat based on my health. So to make sure you remain healthy as you are aging, you don't have to become ill. You don't have to eat more pills than you do food. You're able to maintain a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle. And it also helps you to maintain a healthy mind. And so, you know, getting the specialized diets.
45 Another thing is they have community dining facilities. You don't have to live in a nursing care center to be able to go to the community dinners that they have. There are dining facilities that are just for aging people and especially on specific holidays. And so they have group meals at the senior centers or community dinners. Centers that are near you, find out where they are. And you can not only have a meal, but you are able to interact and meet friends and socialize and laugh and talk. And who knows, if they have a little music, might even do a little jig. There's nothing wrong with us still enjoying living and enjoying life and having fun and not apologizing for having fun because this is our day.
44 This is your day. And this is our time to enjoy the benefits that are out there. Another thing that happens with Wheels on Wheels, they not only just bring food, but they do wellness check-ins. They check in on the person. They visit them. They make sure everything's okay with them. They alert the family or emergency services if it's necessary. So they're almost like another family member. And they're coming in just to check in. They chat with you, sit down, make sure that everything's going okay. And you can trust them and tell them, you know, I fell last night.
31 So they can make sure that they can have repairs done in the home. Like I said, if you're staying put, they can have repairs done in the home to make sure that you don't end up falling or having something like that. They do safety monitoring and social support services. Like I said, they have friendly visits. They make phone calls. And then when there's events coming up where seniors are all, you know, get on the bus and go to these social events together, It also helps to reduce isolation because that isolation can possibly put you into a depressed mode and that doesn't do anybody any good. And for those needing long-term care or navigating complex healthcare needs, the service provides case management. The service helps seniors access government benefits It helps you navigate that whole thing, coordinate care, connect with community resources. And a significant barrier for aging individuals is the loss of ability to drive. That's really important.
57 And so being able to have specialized transportation, transportation is going to take you to your medical appointments. It's going to take you grocery shopping. It's going to take you to social engagements so that you can make friends. You can have friends. You can pick up some little tidbits that aren't on the regular. you know, lunch meal menu or dinner menu or breakfast menu, as long as it's not something that's going to hurt you healthy-wise. Now, if you're not supposed to be eating sugars, please don't go in there and take your trip to the grocery store and buy a bag of candy. Buy some fruit. Buy something nutritional. But it helps you to go and still feel that freedom of making choices on your own so it's really important you know to be able to make sure the service is provided provide all of these necessary needs social isolation as i mentioned before is a major health risk for elderly people Through the community centers, they provide programs intended to foster social, physical, and mental well-being, which evidence suggests is essential for healthy aging. We need to have that physical activity. We need to have that emotional activity where we're interacting with people. They offer programs
32 that help with home modifications or repairs, as I mentioned before. If you're going to be staying and aging in place, you need to make sure that everything's looked at, that everything is secure, and there are no risks. They are in the household, and they will make sure that the repairs are done to reduce the chance of falls. As I mentioned, we don't heal as quickly as others. And also, making sure that, you know, Everything has safe areas, safe things. You know, if you have one of those chairs that goes up and down the stairs, all these things are working properly, making sure that everything is good for you if you're aging in place. And I mentioned before earlier the Project Enhance. That is a program that is available, but it isn't just about physical therapy. It's about empowerment.
36 That's what it's about. It's not just going out there making you do a bunch of exercises. But I'll tell you a little more here. There are some little exercises. Nothing strenuous. You're not having a workout for an hour, hour and a half. You have a five-minute warm-up. You can do that. 20-minute aerobic workout. 20 minutes isn't long. A five-minute cool-down. 20-minute strength training workout. Got to keep those muscles strong so they can carry your bodies and you can be able to lift some things in your room or whatever. 10-minute stretching for flexible muscles. And the best part of it, you have opportunities to meet new friends.
28 So you can be there watching everybody work out and you can tease one another and you can point at one another and then you can all laugh together because we're all in the same boat. And it's a wonderful thing to be around people that are in your particular age group that understands the music that we all enjoyed and the different artists and the different movies and just all the different things. The commonality there is really important as you're aging. Mental and social resilience. Often we focus on the body. But what about our minds? We've got to keep our minds alert. How do programs like Enhanced Wellness address the social isolation that is often accompanies aging, motivational counseling, emotional well-being, and socialization? You can talk to them about emotional things that might be happening inside of you.
34 the feelings and the emotions instead of holding them in. And when you hold them in, they're affecting your physical body. Your blood pressure goes up, your sugar goes up, all of these things. Now you're able to just share and talk and let it out so that you can stay healthy. You've released whatever it was, what was bothering you. And you're going to go out with your new friends that you have met while you were working out. And, you begin socializing and still feeling like you are an empowered human being. It's evidence-based programming like, you know, Project Enhance that offers all of these different opportunities and just staying active so that you age well. we're all here understanding that we're all going to age. But then if you are someone listening and you're wondering what to do for your parents, utilizing the support services that are there in your particular area to help you make decisions, Because it can be extremely complex. There are a lot of different services, a lot of different means and ways to tie them out so that you're able to afford different things. And
05 getting that person there who has that knowledge and has that understanding and has been doing it for a long time, they're going to be able to create a plan for you, a care plan that's going to have beautiful opportunities in it, physically, nutritionally, emotionally, mentally, and socially. All of those things need to be met, not just a bed and someone given medicine. There's more involved to aging and thriving instead of just getting by. These programs, if you get a case manager, it alleviates the caregiver burnout. that so many face when they're trying to do everything themselves. You don't have to do everything yourself.
58 There are people there that are professional at this that can advise you. You can weigh different options and alternatives so that you know you have a way of being able to make the right decision and Your loved one is there to listen in and they can hear what's being said and they can say, yeah, I do want that. Give them a chance. It's still their life. Give them a chance to be involved in the decision making. If there's one thing you can do today, either for yourself or your parent, is to prepare for the future. And what should that be? Preparing for the future is really important.
54 Where should people go to find their local chapter or check their eligibility for these programs? The case manager can be found through health insurances and calling the number on your card. You can contact local or state Department of Social Services. They can provide you with a case manager. They can provide you with where you should go to get help. You can contact Medicare Advantage Part C or Eldercare Locator. And if you have a pencil, please jot this down. The number is 800-677-1116. Start early, even before you need them. Don't wait until it's absolutely necessary. Start early so that you're able to be able to make decisions about this early. You can make decisions and know exactly what it is that you would like to do.
03 And I feel strongly about it because I do have friends that are At the point now they are in nursing facilities, memory facilities. And I've seen some of the problems that occur because they hadn't planned and they didn't have advanced information to be able to make decisions. Everything was done at the last minute. So the best possible options were never considered. And then when you get in one of those facilities, it's very, very difficult to just jump up and leave. It's not like staying at a hotel.
47 It's like, okay, I'm going to change and go to a different hotel tonight. No. There's a lot of paperwork involved, a lot of time involved, and sometimes the answer could end up being no. So do the research in advance so that you are prepared, you are ready, you understand the systems, you understand what you should be expecting. I have told you all the things that you should be expecting when you are out looking for for the right place just in case you might have to have your loved one or you yourself staying in a nursing facility you still understand what services you should be expecting you should be expecting transportation you shouldn't be expecting you know they're having transportation take you to your doctors, to take you to the store, to take you to the pharmacist, to take you, you know, Dining, if that's what you want to do, they should have programs for their residents there where they're going to community centers and interacting with others that are there other than just those that are in that particular facility. Given you still a chance to still be whole and still have a life and still have the laughter and the enjoyment. Of just growing older, but your lifestyle doesn't have to change that much that
18 you still don't laugh. You still don't have fun. You don't have anyone to talk to. The isolation is just dreadful. I know I I talked to people who are in isolation at their facilities and it's just it's heartbreaking. that there's no days out, there's no plans out. So you want to make sure that you start checking early to find out exactly all of the places that you can go, all the places that meets your particular budget. Your budget will dictate where you're able to go. And so you want to make sure even whether your budget is large or whether it's small, there's still services that are being provided in specific areas. Find out where those areas are.
17 Find out what they have to offer. Find out, do I qualify? That's the first thing. finding out whether you qualify, getting signed up with AARP to be able to have those discounts. There are a lot of free meals and discounted meals and discounted gasoline and discounted hotel stays and discounted trips and free movies and free concerts and different things like that. So an AARP is not that expensive. The annual fee is extremely reasonable. And there are a lot of benefits that are on there, not to mention they have a lot of trainings and webinars and YouTube videos and different things like that to tell you what you are eligible for. The free movies and the free concerts are just incredible. And all you have to do is turn on your TV or turn on your laptop and you're able to watch free concerts, concerts that are going on in New York, an opera or a play, just different things that are just beautiful arrangements that you're able to enjoy from the comfort of your home or the comfort of your nursing facility and just, you know, just living. make sure they do have outside, you know,
53 recreation for the elderly when you're looking at things like that. And so, you know, you want to be able to talk with these people. You want to be able to find out what the resources are. You want to be able to walk away, you know, and understanding what your potentials are and what you're capable and able to do and when you call and ask like i said before you want to find out what the eligibility criteria is and you know and then have them assign you a case manager from their office so that you're not having to continue to do more and more and more research.
41 They'll be able to tell you all the different facilities that are in this specific area, break down each and every one of them so that you're able to sit down and kind of compare what they are and what benefits that you will receive so that you can thrive instead of just surviving. You want to still be you, just getting a little few more gray hairs, maybe a couple wrinkles, you know, maybe a little limp. maybe a walker, maybe a wheelchair, that still doesn't take away from the fact that you're still a person that has energy, that's still thinking, that is still enjoying laughter, that is still enjoying all kinds of fun. And you should go ahead and continue that. But that all depends on how much research and how you have compared what's available. and all the things that are available and how it can be placed into your budget. And so that's really important. And the case manager, they can handle or help you out with medical needs, your social and housing needs, and coordinate all of that for you if that's what you're needing.
14 Because I know if you're doing this for a parent, you're busy, you're working, And there's probably not a lot of time left in the days so that you're able to do some of the things that you're wanting to do. So being informed, like I said, this is what we do here at A Sharp Outlook. We inform you. We make sure that you have all of the knowledge, all of the information, all of the opportunity that you can. And then we tell not only the happy part, we tell The sad part also, if you don't do it in advance, you're going to probably end up making a decision very quickly where you or your loved one, you're going to be very unhappy because you didn't know that you should expect more and you didn't take advantage or search to find out what you can get for the funds that you have available. And the majority of the things that I've discussed, they are available on Medicare, Medicaid, in private insurance. And so you should be able to appreciate all of these wonderful things as you're growing old and being able to still be happy, still have laughter and still making friends. Some of the friends you have
46 from high school on up, Well, other things happen and they're not around any longer. But the thing is, you're able to make new friends, whether it be at one of the social groups or it's at one of the dining facilities or it's while you're working out your muscles, doing your physical fitness, just meeting other people that are in your age group is just so fulfilling. and can bring so much happiness and so much satisfaction that it makes it kind of nice that, yes, I'm starting to age, and it's okay because I'm still having a good time.
33 I see trips all the time where different groups, you know, take cruises and they're going out, whether they're on walkers or wheelchairs or whatever, they're still meeting with people in their age group and still enjoying life. Whatever you're doing, it's about thriving. It is not about just surviving. I want you to walk away from the show today saying, I'm still going to have fun. I'm still going to laugh. I'm still going to go to the movies. I'm still going to go to the theater. I'm still going to go to a concert. You know, I'm still going to go dining. I'm going to go to a ball game and I'm going to stand up and yell, you know, keep living, keep your mind and your thoughts and your ideas pumping and keep them still going and keep them still, um, being alive so that you can enjoy life. You work so hard to get to the point of retirement. It's not a time to give up living. It's a time to really start enjoying life because you don't have to get up at 8 o'clock. You don't have to come home at 5 o'clock and then still cook dinner. You're able to enjoy the full day. So you can work out in the mornings. meeting up with your friends, have
05 brunch and then come back and then, you know, sit down, probably take your nap and then get up because you're going to a concert or you're going to a movie. The holidays are coming up. You're taking the Christmas train or whatever it might be. You're still enjoying living. And if you're in your own home and you're staying in place, knowing that your parents or you are in a safe area where you're not going to fall. You're not going to get injured. You're not going to have problems eating good meals anymore. You're not going to be in a situation where you can't make it to your doctor's appointments.
55 All of those necessities are going to be made available to you. And as you are searching, you're going to want to make certain those particular things are available to you. You don't want to give up on your lifestyle at this point in time. You have earned it. It's time for you to enjoy it. It's time for you to keep going. And like I said, you want to keep that mental and social resilience. You want to keep that physical mind. You know, maybe you haven't learned much about your smartphones and AI and things like that. Well, AARP is has a group that teaches AI, a free class, and you're able to go in and have a great time with, you know, just making pictures, doing designs, making comic reels, a whole lot of different things, experiences you probably have never thought of having. And so I would say, Contact them. Look it up. They have sessions on a regular basis and you can sign up and get a free class on how to use AI so that you're a part of what's going on in this modern world because it's not going away and you don't want to
27 be left behind. So you can join those groups and and brush up on your tech or learn it for the first time. And it really is fun. It really is enjoyable. And the things you can do, you can have a whole group of people where you do funnies and others do pictures of the pets and just all kinds of, and you just share them with one another. And it's like, you know, your friends sharing baseball cards when you were kids or sharing marbles when we used to play marbles. So it's about still living. That's what it's about. It's about still thriving. It's about still realizing that life is beautiful. Life is enjoyable. Life can be so full every day. And you're not feeling like, oh, goodness, everything that I've always wanted is just leaving me now. No, it's a time of saying, I've had a full life.
37 in these areas, but I'm going to have an even more enjoyable time as I age because all of those heavy responsibilities I used to have, the bills, the buying school supplies, all those different things that we went through, now is our time. I don't know, how shall I say this? Is it wrong to say now it's all about me? My son always tells me to say, oh, it's Project Angela now. And so it needs to be Project Brenda, Project Jim, Project Bill. It's about you now.
19 And your children are there to reinforce and give their support and what you're enjoying. But don't give up just because your hair's turned gray. Don't give up just because they say you are aging. My goodness, aging is a beautiful thing. It's a beautiful thing to wake up every day. And I'm saying enjoy waking up every day and have a fulfilled mind and a fulfilled life. So what does all of that mean? It means you're independent. Even if you're in a facility, you're still independent. You're making decisions on what you want to do today, what you want to be doing to fulfill your day. Do you want to be exercising? Do you want to be just sitting there feeling sorry for yourself? That's not the way to be aging. It's not a time to be feeling sorry for yourself. It's a time for being thankful for Because, as I said before, many have not reached that age.
32 But we can retire. We can age. We can do it gracefully. We can do it with fun. We can do it happily. We can maybe, if we're able to travel, travel for a few days or a few weeks, visiting grandchildren or great-grandchildren, visiting maybe the island's Maybe taking these trips you weren't able to take because you were working so hard. It's time to have your picture books and going back through your memories and laughing about all the funny things you've done. Maybe writing a memoir. Filling your time with things that keep that brain ticking. The brain is a muscle. You need to keep it fit. So do things to always be challenging your brain to keep it energized, to keep it fit, to keep it, you know, wanting to learn more because it's like a sponge. You've got to give it more and more and more. Give it something. Like I said, try the AI. Take the free course on AARP because you're going to enjoy making those pictures. You're going to enjoy being able to make design.
54 You're going to really enjoy creating things that maybe you didn't do during your younger years, but now you have time to learn something where you can be creative and find that creative person inside. It's called reimagining yourself. Reimagine yourself as you're aging. Don't be depressed. Don't be down. Even if there's illness, you are on medication, you're on herbs, you're on different things to improve your health. But don't let your mind get down and depressed. Shake that off.
37 That's just one of those negative voices speaking in your ears. Don't listen to it. Start thinking about the positive things you have. You woke up this morning. You were able to get out of bed. You were able to prepare your breakfast. It's a blessed day. So it's just wonderful to talk about growing older and seeing those days and navigating how to not only have care, but also keep that vitality going inside. And as you age, I see the older people out there still having a good time.
27 Don't give up enjoying life. Get all of your ducks in line. Get your research done. Find your case manager and put your plan together. Everything requires a plan. You can't build a home without research. drawing up a plan first. There's very few things you can ever do in life without drawing out a plan. So this is just another plan that needs to be designed to be executed so that you get the perfect results that you intended, that you expected, and you're not upset, you're not sad, you're not angry, but you're enjoying life. And you are thriving, not just surviving.
